Get Tested for HIV

If you don’t know your HIV status, you don’t know enough about HIV.  In this day and age where people are debuting sexual involvement earlier and earlier, testing becomes more and more important.  Also, the rules around sex with both young and old are changing, where people are putting themselves more at risk (i.e. unprotected) and not considering the LIFELONG effects of one night of pleasure. In addition, the rules of sexual activity from 20 years ago have changed significantly.  People have multiple partners and within one network of partners may be an individual living with HIV.  With this one person, everyone in the network is AT RISK for contracting HIV.

So, it’s important that you get tested for HIV and know your status.  Should you test negative – GREAT, it is then time to learn how to maintain that status and never contract HIV.  Should you test positive – GREAT, it is then time to incorporate a lifestyle of living healthy and sustaining your quality of life where you are preventing yourself from being RE-infected and preventing the transmission of HIV to others.  After all, do you want to be responsible for changing the course of someone else’s life?

HIV testing, while scary at first can also be so relieving, once you know your status.  Go with a friend, close family member or someone you trust and get tested together.  Whatever you do, know your HIV status and tell others to get tested as well.  One person in the village with HIV who does not know their status has the potential to infect the entire village.
